Hey Frontier Fam! How's it going? I'm writing this post from my kennel at home, because I am a bit under the weather. Which gave me an idea- let's talk about nipping cold symptoms in the bud!
What is a cold?
The common cold is a viral infection of the nose and throat. Even healthy adults get them regularly! Symptoms can include runny nose, cough, low-grade fever, congestion, sneezing, congestion, and general malaise- feelin' icky!
How long will I be sick?
Colds can last over a week! The sooner you start treating your symptoms, the better. Preventative measures are also helpful- keep that cold at bay before symptoms even begin. Bark!
How do I prevent a cold?
Wash those paws! Keep your distance from those around you who show symptoms. Regularly disinfect surfaces. Keep that immune system in working order - get plenty of sleep, take vitamin C supplements, and get antioxidants in your diet. Elderberry supplements may also be effective.
I've already got a cold, what should I do?
Keep your distance from others, get lots of rest, drink lots of water, and treat your symptoms. Ibuprofen, Tylenol and Advil can help with aches and pains, and Sudafed can help with congestion. Talk to Dr. Mel for more specific recommendations!
Can animals get colds?
Thank you for your concern. We do get our own colds, but not the same ones as you. I can't spread my cold to you, and you can't spread your cold to me. Similarly, I can get a dog flu, but cannot get the human flu. Thank goodness! Still, we can spread dog flu and colds to other dogs, so keep us home when we aren't feeling well. We show similar symptoms to you- sneezing and congestion. Take us to the vet immediately to make sure something more serious isn't going on. Cats too! Bark bark!
One last thing- make sure to get tested for COVID-19, as it can present similar symptoms.
